Before it was snugly bound into these hardcover boards, it appears the original softcover book measured 4-7/16 X 6-3/4 inches, or 11.3 X 17.2 centimeters. The green, cloth covered boards of this book measure 4-5/8ths X 6-15/16ths inches, or 11.6 X 17.6 cm. This paperback original has been bound in green cloth-covered boards with gilt titles to spine, probably in the early 20th Century, as said gilt titles are now considerably faded, and both free endpapers moderately foxed. ![]() However, the next page following final page of text is now the blank rear free endpaper - original rear wrap missing and not bound in, and the same is true (obviously) for the publisher's ad to recto of said missing rear wrap. Said final page a bit wrinkled and stressed, but still easily read. Text complete at 141 pp., with the printer's credit ("Printed by Spottiswoode and Co., New-Street Square, London") repeated at bottom of final page of text, which is numbered 141. Said front wrap, hand-corrected as called for, is bound in, with ad for January number of Longmans' Magazine (in the same colors) to verso. first, published in fawn wraps printed in red-and-blue, originally intended for the 1885 Christmas trade and thus dated to the front wrap 1885, that date subsequently corrected to "1886" in ink by hand by the publisher for a January release. ![]()
